~ Lesson 5 : 5과 Location ~
This lesson Focuses on the location of buildings, rooms, classes,nations, objects. Also all my lessons are following The Integrated Korean book series. If you go to their website Klear Texts you can listen to the vocabulary audio at any time. All my vocabulary is the same, but the lessons are not the same. If you wish to know how to spell the names of these countries in Hangul please visit Naver. Just type in the countries name and you will get a translation to Hangul that you can use.

* 있다/있어요 can be used for existence of an entity. 이다 can be used for identification.
When introducing yourself as a student you would say, 저는 학생이에요.
But when stating where something exists you would say, 학교 식당은 유니온 빌딩에 있어요.
* Subject particle 이/가. A word attached to the particle indicates that the word is the subject of the sentence. 이 is used when the noun ends in a consonant. 가 is used when the noun ends in a vowel.
Some examples of how to use 이/가.
Remember how to ask what someone's name is?
이름이 뭐예요?
Asking about where the school cafeteria is located.
학교 식당이 어디 있어요?
Asking if the clock is located above the desk.
시계가 책상 위에 있어요?

Asking and answering questions about an entity.
To express a location you would use the sentence structure. place에 있어요.
카이: 책방이 어디 있어요? Kai: Where is the bookstore?
세훈: 도서관 옆에 있어요. Sehun: Beside the Library.
책방 is the entity of the sentence. where as 어디 is asking about the location of the entity. Sehun answers by telling Kai that the bookstore 책방 is beside 옆 the library 도서관. Sehun doesn't repeat the word 책방 back to Kai because it has already been brought up in conversation and does not need to be repeated back in the answer. The answer is just simply It is beside the Library.
카이: 가방이 어디 있어요? Kai: Where is the bag?
세훈: 책상 의에 있어요. Sehun: It is on top on the desk.
어디 is placed before the verb 있어요. When used in conversation 에 is omitted after 어디.
We can also ask what is around an entity.
세훈: 책상 밑에 뭐가 있어요? Sehun: What is below the desk?
카이: 가방이 있어요. Kai: It is a bag.
We can ask what is inside an entity. This also works with rooms as well.
세훈: 가방 안에 뭐가 있어요? Sehun: What is inside the bag?
카이: 가방 안에 책이 있어요. Kai: There is a book inside the bag.
카이: 교실 안에 뭐가 있어요? Kai: What is inside of the classroom?
세훈: 교실 안에 의자가 있어요. Sehun: There is a chair inside the classroom.
We can also ask what is around an entity.
세훈: 책상 밑에 뭐가 있어요? Sehun: What is below the desk?
카이: 가방이 있어요. Kai: It is a bag.
We can ask what is inside an entity. This also works with rooms as well.
세훈: 가방 안에 뭐가 있어요? Sehun: What is inside the bag?
카이: 가방 안에 책이 있어요. Kai: There is a book inside the bag.
카이: 교실 안에 뭐가 있어요? Kai: What is inside of the classroom?
세훈: 교실 안에 의자가 있어요. Sehun: There is a chair inside the classroom.
Let's practice asking where entities are located a little more.
카이: 기숙사가 어디 있어요? Kai: Where is the dormitory?
세훈: 학생회관 뒤에 있어요. Sehun: Behind the student center.
카이: 우체국이 어디 있어요? Kai: Where is the post office?
세훈: 책방 앞에 있어요. Sehun: In front of the bookstore.
카이: 의자는 어디 있어요? Kai: Where is the chair?
세훈: 책상 뒤에 있어요. Sehun: Behind the desk.
카이: 책는 어디 있어요? Kai: Where is the book?
세훈: 책상 안에 있어요. Sehun: Inside the desk.
Let's get a little deeper into location now. We can make a statement about where an entity is located as well.
Making statements about where an entity is located.
카이가 책방에 있어요. Kai is at the bookstore.
세훈이 학교에 있어요. Sehun is at school.
유니온 빌딩은 우체국 앞에 있어요. Union building is in front of the post office.
학생회관은 유니온 빌딩 뒤에 있어요. The student center is behind union building.
가방은 의자 옆에 있어요. The bag is beside the chair.
책은 책상 위에 있어요. The book is above the desk.
학교 식당은 유니온 빌딩 안에 있어요. 도서관 밑에도 학교 식당이 있어요.
The school's cafe is inside Union building. The school cafe is also below the library.
Location of countries.
Let's look at this map and find out the location of countries. Remember to express a location is [place]에 있어요. Let's look at five countries that are easily visible on this map. China, Russia, Canada, Mexico, Brazil.
Lets look at North America. There is Mexico and Canada so let's start with these two. Notice that Canada is above the United States and Mexico is below the United States.
케나다는 미국위에 있어요. Canada is above the United States.
멕시코는 쿠바 밑에 있어요. Mexico is below the United States.
러시아는 핀란드 엽에 있어요. Russia is next to/beside Finland.
Now your turn to practice and make up some locations based off of Brazil and China. There are many possible outcomes.
place는/은 place (Brazil or China) Position (Above, Below, Beside)에 있어요.
I am posting this video because she pronounces some of the vocabulary such as up, above, etc Just listen to the vocabulary pronunciation you don't need to learn anything else from this video at the moment since we haven't learned this. We will get to this soon.
Changing the topic particle.
Remember to change the topic the particle that you use is 는/은 there are a couple of ways to change the topic.
Notice how the paticle 는 is used in the conversation. The topic is locating the student center. But since the student is in the library and sehun doesn't know where the library is, he changes the topic to locating the library.
세훈: 저어, 학생회관이 어디 있어요? Sehun: Uh, Where is the student center?
카이: 도서관 1층에 있어요. Kai: On the 1st floor of the library.
세훈: 도서관는 어디 있어요? Sehun: Where is the library?
카이: 기숙사 앞에 있어요. Kai: It's in front of the dormitory.
카이: 우체국이 어디 있어요? Kai: Where is the post office?
세훈: 도서관 뒤에 있어요. Sehun: It's behind the library.
카이: 책방은요? Kai: How about the bookstore?
세훈: 유니온 빌딩 안에 있어요. Sehun: It's in union building.
